New Site – Looking for Feedback (please leave a comment)

by on Feb.18, 2010, under Uncategorized

I’m in the process of integrating my various web locations in to a central, WordPress managed, location. The idea is that it will make my life a lot easier if I’m able to do almost everything from within WordPress, instead of doing raw HTML for my portfolio pages, Blogger for my blog, etc. I’m still pulling together the various components, but right now I have my image portfolio and blog integrated and served via WordPress. In the future I hope to add the content of my Image Notebook blog to this site as well. I also hope to integrate my ImageKind store into the site as well. Currently the ‘purchase’ link just takes you to my ImageKind page.

Before I make this version of my web site live, I would appreciate getting feedback on what you think about the redesign. The new site will replace the content found at http://www.jameshowephotography.com and http://images.jameshowephotography.com. Please poke around this version of the site and leave comments on this post to let me know what you think. All constructive comments are welcome. I’m still working out my color scheme so that might change, but feel free to comment on it. Also, there may be glitches in functionality. If you notice something unusual, please point it out. I may already know about it, but then again, I might not.

Thanks!

Zingerman’s – Ann Arbor

by on Feb.18, 2010, under Architecture, Michigan

(Olympus E-3, 7-14mm at 10mm (2x crop factor), ISO 100, 5 exposures @ f/9.0)

This image shows Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The company I work for recently moved to a new office and we wanted some images from around town to adorn our walls. Since we all enjoy Zingerman’s food, we named one of our conference rooms “Zingerman’s”. A print of this picture now adorns the wall of that conference room.

The shot was taken with my Olympus E-3 with the 7-14mm wide angle lens. I processed the image using Photoshop and used the Topaz Adjust and Topaz Simplify filter to give the image a bit of a different look. I liked the effect the filters had on the stone work and reflections in the windows.

Michigan Stadium

It’s been a rough couple of years for the University of Michigan football program, but one of the things which is headed in the right direction is completion of modifications to Michigan Stadium. While I still preferred the stadium when it had a lower profile, I’m getting used to the new look. This shot shows the entrance to ‘Champions Plaza’, which is the main entrance to Michigan Stadium. Each corner of the stadium has a special plaza with customized bricks which have been purchased by fans and alumni as part of a fund raising effort. These plazas were actually built before the current stadium expansion plan.

This particular shot of the stadium was taken in spring of 2008 in the evening. The sun was setting off to the west and it cast a nice glow on the lettering of the gates. I was looking through some images in Lightroom this morning and this one appeared in a collection where I wasn’t expecting it. However, I liked the look of it so here it is. Processing was actually fairly minimal. The sky was already pretty pale so I just enhanced that a bit. I tweaked the contrast a bit on the gates, desaturated the color a little and added a vignette.

Next year the stadium construction will be done. Hopefully the team reconstruction will also show significant progress as well. Go Blue!

"Untitled Vessel" – UM Museum of Art

by on Jan.10, 2010, under Michigan, University of Michigan

(Olympus E-3, 7-14mm at 9mm (2x crop factor), ISO 400, exposure 1/6 sec @ f/5.0)

This image shows ‘Untitled Vessel’ a fine art piece by Ray Allen, on display at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. I took this shot with my ultra-wide angle lens and I just liked the way the piece looked in the museum light. The raw image was rather dark, but I was able to brighten it considerably in Adobe Lightroom. I was able to use a combination of fill light and blacks to brighten the front of the piece which was rather dark in the raw image. I used Topaz Simplify on the background to give it less detail and to keep the focus on the artwork.

I was walking through Nickels Arcade recently and noticed this storefront. I just thought this was an interesting collection of ‘stuff’. Image processing mostly consisted of added a bit more contrast to bring out the features of the toys.
